Web piecing builds on chain piecing, but all squares stay connected in columns and rows. This assembly technique saves time and thread and prevents pieces from getting out of order. You can work in quadrants or smaller sections.

   Lay out your squares

   Arrange squares face-up per the pattern. Your pattern indicates columns are labeled alphabetically; rows are labeled numerically. You can work in quadrants or smaller sections.

   Stack each column, top to bottom

   Stack the squares of each column from top to bottom — A1 on top of A2, A2 on top of A3, and so on through the last row at the bottom. Pin the column label to the top square. Repeat for the other columns.

   Piece stacks A & B together

   Take the top square from stack A and the top square from stack B. Sew them right sides together at 1/4" from the edge. Without cutting the thread, take the next pair and sew. Continue until both stacks are empty — you now have a chain of connected pairs. Cut the thread after the last pair to free the chain from the machine.

   Add remaining columns

   From the top of the chain, sew the top square from stack C right sides together to the opened square from stack B. Work down without cutting the connecting threads. Cut only at the end of each stack. Repeat for the remaining stacks. Your web now holds all squares in perfect order.

   Join the rows

   Place rows 1 & 2 right sides together. Finger press seams in opposite directions and pin or clip in place. Sew them right sides together at 1/4" from the edge. Then join rows 2 & 3, repeating the process for all the rows.

   Press seams

   Press odd rows (1, 3, 5) in one direction and even rows (2, 4) in the other direction. Seams will nest perfectly at every intersection. If piecing in quadrants, press rows in left-side sections downward and right-side sections upward so the sections nest when joined.
